Telemedicine Service Now Reaches Over 200 Remote Mountain Villages

Nepal's telemedicine initiative has crossed a significant milestone, with satellite-linked health kiosks now operational in over 200 remote mountain villages across 15 districts. The program connects patients in some of the most isolated communities with specialist doctors in Kathmandu through high-definition video consultations.

Each kiosk is staffed by a trained health assistant equipped with basic diagnostic tools, including a digital stethoscope, blood pressure monitor, and portable ultrasound device. Patient data is transmitted securely to consulting physicians who can provide diagnoses and treatment recommendations in real time.

The initiative has proven particularly valuable for pregnant women and elderly patients who previously had to endure multi-day journeys on foot to reach the nearest hospital. Since its launch, over 35,000 consultations have been completed, with health officials estimating that the service has prevented at least 200 medical emergencies from becoming fatal.

Funding from the Nepal Telecommunications Authority and the World Bank has enabled rapid expansion of the network. Officials plan to extend coverage to 500 villages by the end of next year, with a focus on districts in Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces.
