Major Contemporary Art Exhibition Opens at Nepal Art Council Gallery

The Nepal Art Council Gallery in Babar Mahal opened its largest contemporary art exhibition in a decade on Saturday. 'New Horizons' features 120 works by 45 Nepali artists working across painting, sculpture, installation, digital art, and mixed media.

Curator Sheelasha Rajbhandari brought together established masters and emerging voices to explore three core themes: rapidly changing urban landscapes, the tension between tradition and modernity, and Nepal's vulnerability to climate change.

Standout works include Asha Dangol's massive mixed-media installation depicting Kathmandu's disappearing water heritage, and Hit Man Gurung's provocative digital art series questioning social media's impact on Nepali identity.

The exhibition runs for three months and includes weekly artist talks, workshops for young artists, and guided tours in multiple languages. The Art Council expects over 50,000 visitors during the exhibition's run, making it a landmark cultural event for Kathmandu.
