Nepali Film Industry Celebrates Record-Breaking Box Office Year
Kollywood achieved its highest-ever annual box office collection of 4.5 billion rupees, driven by a string of commercially successful films.
Nepal's film industry, popularly known as Kollywood, achieved a record annual box office collection of 4.5 billion rupees, marking a 60 percent increase over the previous year. The milestone was driven by improved production quality and growing multiplex audiences.
The year's biggest hit, the action drama 'Bir Gorkhali,' became the first Nepali film to cross the 500 million rupee mark at the domestic box office. Directed by Nawal Nepal, the film also earned 120 million rupees from international markets with significant Nepali diaspora populations.
Industry experts credit the resurgence to a new generation of filmmakers who are blending commercial appeal with strong storytelling. Digital marketing strategies and simultaneous worldwide releases have also expanded the audience base significantly.
The Film Development Board announced plans to establish a national film city in Chitwan with studios, post-production facilities, and training academies, aiming to make Nepal a regional filmmaking hub.
