Remittance Inflow to Nepal Hits Record $12 Billion in Fiscal Year

Nepal received a record $12 billion in remittances during the last fiscal year, according to central bank data. The figure represents approximately 25 percent of the country's GDP and a 15 percent increase over the previous year.

Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE remain the top destinations for Nepali migrant workers. An increasing number of workers are also finding employment in South Korea, Japan, and European nations.

The government announced plans to leverage remittance flows for productive investment through new financial instruments. A proposed remittance bond scheme aims to channel funds into infrastructure and industrial development.

Migration experts emphasized the need to address the root causes of labor migration by creating quality employment opportunities within Nepal, noting the social costs of family separation.
