Nepal's Orthodox Tea Exports to Europe Surge by 45 Percent
High-altitude Nepali teas gain premium positioning in European specialty markets.
Nepal's orthodox tea exports to European markets surged by 45 percent in the past year, reaching $25 million in value. German, French, and British buyers are increasingly sourcing high-altitude Nepali teas for specialty collections.
The Nepal Tea and Coffee Development Board attributes the growth to improved quality standards and successful marketing campaigns at international trade fairs. Organic certification has been a key differentiator.
Small-scale tea farmers in Ilam and Dhankuta districts are seeing significant income increases. Cooperatives have helped farmers adopt better processing techniques and meet European food safety standards.
Industry leaders are now pushing for geographical indication certification for Nepali highland tea, similar to Darjeeling tea's protected status, which would further boost the brand's premium positioning.
