Fiber Optic Internet Finally Reaches Remote Humla District
Nepal's most remote district is now connected with high-speed fiber optic internet for the first time in history.
Humla, one of Nepal's most remote and geographically challenging districts, is now connected to the national fiber optic network. The milestone was celebrated at a ceremony attended by the Minister of Communication and local officials in Simikot, the district headquarters.
The 280-kilometer fiber optic cable was laid through some of the most difficult terrain in the Himalayas, crossing rivers, gorges, and mountain passes above 4,000 meters. The project took three years to complete and cost 1.8 billion rupees.
Residents of Humla will now have access to broadband internet speeds of up to 100 Mbps, a dramatic improvement from the unreliable satellite internet that previously served the area. Schools, health posts, and government offices are the first to be connected.
Local leaders say the connectivity will transform education and healthcare delivery in the district, enabling telemedicine consultations and access to online learning resources for over 12,000 students in the region.
